1. A Christmas Book (Sheet Music) as a Gift

You know your student could use a book of Christmas songs for the upcoming recital and for adding a little holiday spirit to December lessons anyways. Why not gift this book to the family?

The trick here is to let the student and family know that this is a gift, so they can appreciate the gesture and so they aren’t confused on when and how to pay for the additional book.

You can let the family know this is a gift in a few different ways:

  • Wrap it and/or put a bow on it and give it to the student at the end of the last lesson before Thanksgiving break (or earlier if you’d like)
  • Take a picture of the student and the book by the piano or of you, the student, and the book by the tree and attach it in a gratitude email to the family
  • Write a personal note to the student in the front cover (show the student so they don’t miss it

💵 Cost Per Student: $7.00-$10.00

2. Magnetic Music Bookmarks

My students love these for finding their page easily, especially in their assignment/practice book.

Amazon sells this pack of 8 bookmarks (check price) which could be gifted as is. Or you could split up a pack of 8 and add it to a treat.

💵 Cost Per Student: around $5.00 for full pack

Or add a bookmark or two to a shiny, new Practice Record Book! It’s functional, fun, and motivating.

I have two Practice Record Books that I created. One is for younger students and includes beginner theory pages, and the other is for older students and includes in-depth quarterly goal setting pages.

💵 Cost Per Student: $5.00-$8.00 for practice record book

3. Music Ornaments

A classic Christmas gift idea for piano students and something they can enjoy for years to come.

Personalized keepsake Christmas ornaments are not a cheap option if you have a big studio, therefore this may not be an every-year gift idea.

However, these are such a special keepsake and the epitome of “just buy and give” that you may want to consider this option for Christmas gifts for your piano students every few years.

Amazon sells many cheap music ornaments in bulk. Be cautious when ordering these. Some of them are very low quality and paper thin. Often they come with flimsy pieces of string you have to tie on yourself, and I’ve found typos on them as well! These cheap ornaments may work as an add-on to a treat bag or more substantial gift, but likely will not work as a stand-alone gift for your piano students.

That being said, you can find some fun musical ornaments for as little as $0.36 per ornament!

Click here to browse all of Amazon’s music ornament options.

But, if you’re looking for something nicer, I have a few different options for you!

  • Black Treble Clef “Where words fail music speaks” ornamentscheck price on Amazon
    • Warning: these are cheap and may not serve as a stand-alone gift
    • These are the cheapest “okay” ornaments I’ve ordered 🙂
    • Flimsy string included (you’ll need to tie them on)
    • I have found typos or misprints on a few, but the words are usually pretty good
    • Best paired with one other item (book, cookie, candy cane, etc.)
  • 💵 Cost Per Student: around $0.60 per ornament

For a nice mid-range option…

  • Silver or Gold Treble Clef ornamentscheck price on Amazon
    • Nice weight to them
    • You do have to attach the strings
    • 6 to a pack
  • 💵 Cost Per Student: around $1.70 per ornament

Or…

  • Stained Glass Treble Clef/Piano Ornament – check price on Amazon
    • Disclaimer: I have not personally ordered this one but I just think it looks really pretty!
    • 1 ornament only
  • 💵 Cost Per Student: around $10 per ornament

And for a true KEEPSAKE, I have to give a shout-out to a local business. I know the owner and they offer the most beautiful, giftable personalized keepsake ornaments (and other items).

  • Fully Personalized Ceramic Ornament shop or contact So Sweet Party Shop
    • I have worked with the owners to create my own logo design on the ornament. They came out beautifully and came in a lovely little gift box with each student’s name.
    • Want a custom design? Reach out to them! They are expert designers and offer exceptional customer service. I can’t recommend them enough!
  • 💵 Cost Per Student: around $16 per ornament

Christmas Gifts for Piano Students for the DIY Teacher

I see you, DIY-er. You see something you like in a store and think, “I could make that for half the price!” You’re always crafting or putting things together yourself.

If this describes you, you can really save some money and present a very clever and special gift for your students this year by doing some cutting and assembling yourself.

4. Snowman Soup (Snowman Sonata) Christmas Gifts for Piano Students

You may have spotted this cute student gift trend known as “Snowman Soup.” Basically, it’s the ingredients for a peppermint hot chocolate packaged as a melting snowman with a cute poem.

I’ve reimagined this trend as “Snowman Sonata.” The same ingredients now encourage students build a three-movement Sonata (hot chocolate).

The instructions read:

For the FIRST MOVEMENT, Add all of your ingredients to a musical mug.

For the SECOND MOVEMENT, Add a slow pour of warm water.

For the THIRD MOVEMENT, Stir up a grand finale with your candy cane baton.

Take a sip and then…encore!

💵 Cost Per Student: around $1.00 per student

music note cookie cutter. christmas gifts for piano students

Honestly, who doesn’t love getting a cookie? If you’re a baker (or even for those who are no stranger to the pre-made dough section of the grocery store), bake up a batch of music-shaped cookies!

This simple, but homemade gift will be appreciated by all, young and old.

Use your own special recipe of any kind. It doesn’t have to be music-themed if you’ve got a killer family recipe for chocolate chip cookies. But if you’d like, I’ll link this eighth note shaped cookie cutter.

Grab the printable music-themed note in my resource store to add to your cookie gift bags (it’s FREE!)

“No More Junk” Consumable or Useful Christmas Gifts for Piano Students

Those of us who are parents ourselves know the pain of people giving our kids endless cheap, plastic junk that piles up in our home. The amount of factory-made items that just end up in the landfill every year is a problem.

If you’d like to skip the junk this year, here are some gift ideas for piano students that will either be used in a more longterm functional way, recycled, or consumed (for the most part).

It’s worth mentioning that other gift ideas mentioned previously could also fit into the “no junk” category, so if you skipped right down here, you might want to skim the other two sections.

9. Christmas Goodie Bag Christmas Treats for Piano Students

It’s simple, it’s predictable, but my students always love receiving a bag of goodies.

And I made sure there are coveted favorite name brand candies included!

Some of the favorites requested year after year by my students are Reese’s and Rolos, but I also have some students who aren’t into chocolate so much and they love the fruity and sour stuff!

💵 Cost Per Student: varies based on the candies you select and the sales you can find but let’s say around $2.00 per student including the bag

Here are some suggested goodies to include (I’ll link to Target but watch Walgreen’s and your local grocery store chain for good sales):

For a more eco-friendly bag option, try these festive paper treat bags.

10. Piano Lesson Coupons – Fun Studio Gift for Piano Students

This gift is literally just regular old paper. But the musical fun it contains is what we’ll call an “experience gift!”

Within the mini pages of the Piano Lesson Coupon Book your students will find coupons to get them out of theory homework, allow them to be teacher for the day or choose the keyboard sounds, or enjoy a creative activity like a theory game, composing or recording day!

Music Theory Activity Booklets. Christmas gifts for piano students. the tattooed piano teacher

11. Christmas Theory Activity Booklet for Piano Students

I love this one as an after-recital reward, or a before-break gift, or even a Christmas party favor.

Like the lesson coupons, it’s simply paper! But it contains eight fill-in-the-blank note-naming challenges for students to complete over holiday break. Each fill-in-the-blank page reveals a cute and clever Christmas-themed poem.

The booklet prints on three sheets of regular printer paper (colored paper optional) and folds into a half-size booklet.

I’ve created a Christmas Story Theory Booklet for every level!

Or buy the BUNDLE and print all levels as many times as you’d like for years to come!

January Note-a-Day Mini Book Christmas gift for piano students. the tattooed piano teacher

12. January Note-a-Day Mini Book – Gift for Piano Students

On the same vein as the theory activity booklet, the Note-a-Day Mini Books have students reveal a fun music-themed, seasonal poem at the end of the book. Students name one note per day for a full month and certain days serve as a code to fill in a blank at the back of the mini book.

I have these mini books for every book, but for the sake of a Christmas gift idea, I suggest gifting each student with a January Note-a-Day Mini Book which encourages them to name a note per day starting on January 1st.

These mini books are small but fun. Attach a mini book to a treat or other gift, or gift it on its own.

Buy the January Note-a-Day Mini Book.

One purchase = 3 levels. Buy the mini book and get three PDF files:

  • Level 1 is the easiest note naming challenges (98% just C pentascale + Middle C Position notes)
  • Level 2 challenges students to name all notes on the staff
  • Level 3 is all notes on the staff plus lower and higher ledger lines

You will get all three levels with your purchase of the Mini Book. It also comes with instructions for printing and assembling and you only need regular printer paper.
