Looking for some engaging summer music activities you can use with your piano students? In this post, I’ll share a variety of music activities from games, to puzzles, to coloring, to worksheets–and you’ll spot a couple of free downloads you can try out as well.

While classroom teachers are taking a much needed break from their duties, us piano teachers are still around and looking for fun ways to spice up music theory time!

Some of these summer music activities are perfect for small group lessons, others work great in private lessons, and still others make an excellent at-home assignment–so you’re sure to find something that will work with your students.

Watch for a couple of freebie sprinkled in:

  • Free Summer Break Practice Bingo
  • Free Summer Color-By-Note Coloring Page

And if you’re thinking, “Enough talk! Just show me the resources!” You can…

Summer Rhythm Bingo

This is a summertime version of my bestselling music game: Rhythm Bingo.

The game works just like traditional bingo, but the teacher will call out rhythms. Students will then need to match the rhythm they heard to the corresponding rhythm on the board.

I love this game because it helps link the note and rest values students see in their method books with the musical rhythms they hear every day. After all, what good is music theory if you can’t apply it to what you’re playing?

The game includes three levels, each progressively harder:

  • Level 1 shows the rhythm + picture + words
  • Level 2 shows the rhythm + picture
  • Level 3 shows the rhythm only

This helps teachers to work with groups of various ages, even combined age groups.

Plus, there are endless ways to use these bingo pages as a rhythm teaching tool!

I also created the same resource in an alternate version: Vacation Rhythm Bingo. What’s the difference? Just different phrases!

Summer Rhythm Bingo is more stay-in-town-by-the-pool vibes.

Vacation Rhythm Bingo is more destination beach vacation vibes. And this version could be used around Spring Break as well.

Free Summer Piano Practice Bingo

And here’s our first freebie! Summer Practice Bingo for your piano students.

Now, this bingo is not a bingo game like the Rhythm Bingo.

This is a take-home page to encourage piano practice over summer break.

This printable is perfect if…

  • you are a piano teacher who takes the summer off, or
  • you are a piano teacher who takes a long break in the summer.

Print one bingo board for each student just before the break.

Instruct them to complete as many activities as they can over the break, marking their board along the way.

And when they return to lessons, they’ll show you their completed board.

Offer a reward for each “bingo” completed (5 in a row).

Hopefully this fun little incentive will keep them coming back to the piano over break!

Summer Music Coloring Pages

Little kids and big kids (myself included) love coloring! Even the most anti-theory students will usually smile at the prospect of completing a music theory coloring assignment.

There are three sets of music coloring pages available:
